This report is a little late, but I think still of interest.
On Tuesday, Dec 3, we had a wonderful prescribed burn at Audubon Trails Nature Center in Rolla. The burn was about 23 acres and included a small glade, woodland, savanna, and our remnant prairie,
>>>> A big thank you to the crews from Quail Forever who ran the burn for us, along with assistance from some very able volunteers!<<<<
During the burn, a couple of Red Tailed Hawks were checking the area out, I presume hunting for some of the rabbits we flushed out.
Also, a Cooper's Hawk and a Sharp-shinned Hawk were patrolling in the woodland outside the burn unit.
Quite interesting to see.
In the days after the burn, birds were feeding extensively in the burned prairie and savanna and also taking shelter in the unburned shrubby areas. Several Bluebirds, Song Sparrows, Swamp Sparrows, Goldfinches, and Yellow-shafted Flickers observed.
It's always interesting to see the changes in use of the areas after a burn.
On another note: my husband and I watched a Sharp-shinned Hawk kill a male cardinal in our front yard today. Sad for the cardinal, but yeah for the hawk!
