Two non-birding friends and I observed a Townsend’s Warbler at close range
as it foraged among the strings of Christmas lights wound around the street
light poles outside the Peet’s Coffee shop on Fourth Street in Berkeley.
We watched with amusement as we waited for Peet’s to reopen after the
tsunami warning was lifted. The warbler was beautiful and spent several
minutes very actively gleaning among the bases of (unlit) lights. My
daughter Lily speculated that the warbler may have been gleaning small
insects which had been attracted to the light bulbs during the night and
had become trapped.
Good birding!
