I made a quick pass through Shawnee and Jefferson counties yesterday afternoon. I was following up on a couple of earlier reports, the BLACK SCOTER showed well at Lake Shawnee and COMMON LOON put on a show of struggling with a panfish for Carol Morgan and myself at Shawnee SFL.
There was a large number and diversity of waterfowl at each stop and a huge number of gulls at Perry Lake that had me wishing I had more planned more time to look through them all. I had a very distant small gull at Perry while scoping from the road on the closed portion of the bridge on 237th that I wish was closer, but with the extensive black on the wings and flying with Bonaparte's my immediate thought was Little Gull. However, the bird only gave me one quick glimpse of its wings before setting down and didn't pick up again before I left to get to the dam before dark.
