Subject: [NEBirds] Dannebrog
Nebraska birders,

The weather forecast was favorable for birding on Sunday, November 17.
There was almost no wind so I drove up to Howard County to bird the trail
at Dannebrog. I don’t know why but this is one of my favorite places. I
parked the car at a church on East Depot Street and First Street South. I
walked south past the cemetery and around the sewage ponds. I went through
the woods beside the highway and followed the trail to the north end of
town. Then the trail loops east and south back into downtown.

I’ve entered all of the birds that I saw onto eBird. In the woods, I heard
several White-breasted Nuthatches, a Red-bellied Woodpecker, a Hairy
Woodpecker, several Northern Flickers and a Brown Creeper. I saw two
Red-headed Woodpeckers in the woods where there are many oak trees. They
may be able to stay for the winter. As I was walking on the trail, I
nearly stepped on a small snake. It was about a foot long and about as
skinny as a pencil. It was moving rather slow. I hope it finds a warm
place to spend the winter.

I saw two Red-tailed Hawks flying over the sewage lagoons. One was a
typical light morph but the other was a beautiful dark morph.
