Nebraska birders,
On Saturday, November 16, I started birding in Hall County at Shelton’s
sewage pond. The wind was already blowing hard and the sun was still low
enough to make identifying birds difficult. The dozen ducks were
silhouettes. Most looked the size of Mallards but a few looked more like
teal. They went unidentified due to the bad lighting.
I went about a mile south to Shelton’s cemetery. The wind made it hard to
hear but I did identify four common species. Every bird that I saw today
is entered onto ebird. I stopped at War Axe SRA but I saw no birds. I
went into Adams County to the Kenesaw sewage lagoons. The light was poor
here as well and the ducks were on the far pond. I drove to the Thirty-two
Mile Creek lake. The water level is very low. I could not find any
shorebirds despite extensive mudflats.
I drove north to the Nature Conservancy’s Derr House, between Prosser and
Wood River. I saw one adult Bald Eagle flying over and a flock of about
fifteen Red-winged Blackbirds. My next stop was Cheyenne SRA but it was
closed for construction of camping pads. At Wood River West WMA, I found
two Pied-billed Grebes.
Even though there were not many birds, it was still nice to get out.
