When I arrived at Neary this morning I was greeted by a Townsend's warbler hopping along the path 5 feet away. Mallards and Wood ducks were on the settling pond. Amongst the large flock of Mallards on the path on the treatment plant side of the lagoon there were a couple of American Wigeon and a Northern Pintail. As I walked further toward the metal bridge I noticed a large flock of tiny birds that went into the reeds. I got some good looks at several Scaly-breasted Munias. Two Red-shouldered Hawks were being very shouty along the boardwalk by the houses, which annoyed the Crows and made activity low, but a Lincoln's Sparrow posed cooperatively for me. Turning across the lagoon on the boardwalk I heard a Sora and a Marsh Wren, both rarer for this location. Maybe the lack of Tule removal is an explanation. Moving on to the end of Woodrow I found a large flock of gulls, Heermans, Western, Californian and Short Billed. There were also a couple of Bonaparte's gulls. Loons are making an appearance with the 3 common types seen, Red-throated, Pacific and Common. There were some shorebirds too, Black Turnstones, Sanderlings, Black Oystercatchers and a lone Surfbird. Another Townsends Warbler landed nearby on the rocks, so I took the hint and finished up. A nice mornings birding. Phil Brown
