Subject: [ia-bird] Possible late Turkey Vulture Harrison co.
Saturday morning, Nov. 16, as I was driving into Tyson Bend, I saw a
large black raptor on a tree limb. When I was about 50 yards away, it flew
and I clearly saw the grayish posterior margin on the underside of the
wings a Turkey vulture would have.
But the wind was quite brisk, so the bird was obliged to do some fancy
aerobatics to stay aloft, so I didn't get a good look at it in a 'normal'
posture.
I do remember seeing a fan-shaped tail, so it could have been a dark
morph redtail hawk (but Turkey vultures do sometimes show a fan-shaped tail
during certain maneuvers.) The bird wasn't watching a nearby field like a
hawk would, it was perched further into the woods.
Inconclusive I know, but I thought I'd share. Seeing birds you can't
be sure about is half the fun.
