Dear friends,
Concerning the woodcock, I should also mention that I've already forwarded the photos Maria Gonzalez sent me to Tom Benson, secretary of the California Bird Records Committee.
Good birding,

Dear friends,
Maria Gonzalez alerted me today that an American Woodcock was picked up at Coronado High School this morning and delivered to Project Wildlife. The bird could fly only a few feet, and Maria (who as a veterinary technician examined it on intake at Project Wildlife) suspects a broken coracoid (the bone that braces the sternum against the shoulder). The bird has now been transferred to Sea World bird rescue, and I wrote to Jeni Smith there that California's birding community will be eager to here how the story ends. Of course I emphasized that if the bird dies or needs to be euthanized it's essential that the specimen be preserved at the San Diego Natural History Museum. There are only two previous records of the woodcock in California, in 1998 and 2006, and one previous specimen (the one found at Desert Center, Riverside County, in 2006 is preserved at the Los Angeles County Museum).
Good birding,
