As the pleasant weather continues we were treated to a hermit thrush and 2 eastern bluebirds at our water feature.
Our back patio is framed by a trellis on which grows some vines including what we call mammy bean (Dolchios lablab) aka hyacinth bean and a flowering vine my wife calls cardinal flower (not Lobelia cardinalis). The vines and their flowers attract hummingbirds.
We installed a fountain that has four splashes of water that recirculate next to some shallow pans of water we keep filled. There is also a recirculating Avian Aquatics three-tiered water feature without the pump on. So there is audible and attractive splashing, and standing shallow water; lots of structure to rest upon and feeders (suet, seed and nectar) at many places. By far the most attractive thing seems to be the water, especially in this drought.
While watching the bluebirds and hermit thrush, a male ruby-throated hummingbird came in to roost then take nectar from the still flowering vines. I believe this NOT to be our latest RTHU but I am about to check eBird and my wife's nature notes. Dec 6 2021 was our latest.
We shall see.
