Good morning SBB'ers,
I got the sad news a few days ago that Kendric Smith passed away recently. I met him in the late 90's in Les Chibana's birding class. I hadn't seen him in recent years, but knew that he had moved to a retirement community in Los Gatos some time ago, along with his wife, Marian, who passed away a few years ago.
Kendric and Marian were retired and living their best life birding and traveling back in the late '90s. He was the first person I had known in my life that had an active retirement. He was active in the birding community and frequently posted items on his birding website, including tide tables, his observations of a Merlin he called 'Merlie' that came each winter to a nearby tree, maps of south bay birding locations, birding and environmental websites, his advocacy for adding Scaly-breasted Munia as a countable bird in Santa Clara County, and many other things. I see that his website still exists: https://web.stanford.edu/~kendric/birds/
Meeting, getting to know, and birding with Kendric back in the late 1990's and early 2000's made a huge difference in my life in many ways. RIP Kendric--you will fondly live on in my memories.
