Hi Birders,
A cold start thinned the crowd a bit this morning with ultimately 13
birders walking the trails around San Pedro House. A reminder for those
joining the walk in the winter, that the temperature along the river can be
up to 15 degrees colder than in Sierra Vista. Clear and calm overnight
conditions usually result in the biggest temperature deltas. Remember to
bring your hat and gloves and an extra layer on cold mornings. The good
news is that it usually warms up reasonably quickly.
The bird numbers today were not too bad in quantity but were reasonably low
in species with the group finding 39 throughout the walk. This is about
what to expect at this time of year. Even with the low species count there
were some nice highlights, including a female/immature type Scott's
Oriole. A good bird anytime along the river and especially so in
November. We had a number of American Wigeon and Mallards to go along with
the usual Mexican Ducks in Black Phoebe pond as a nice treat. We also had
a Red-naped Sapsucker which again is another bird not seen too often on the
walks.
The Friends of the San Pedro River leads birding walks on the second and
fourth Wednesday of each month. For the month of November, the walks start
at
7:00 am from the BLM’s San Pedro House off AZ Highway 90 just west of the
San
Pedro River. The walks last about three hours. Bring your own binoculars, a
hat and water.
The next San Pedro River birding walk is on Wednesday, 27 November at
7:00am.
