LAbirders,
We're really excited to share that our research team working on Black Rails in Louisiana has confirmed breeding evidence of Black Rails in southwestern Louisiana, specifically by documenting broods of flightless chicks using trail cameras. The lead author of the paper, Lauren Monopoli, is a Ph.D. student at the University of Illinois who put the pieces together to figure this out. The Eastern Black Rail (the population east of the Rockies) was listed as Threatened under the Endangered Species Act in November 2020, so there is extra sensitivity around sharing locations of birds.
Our surveys for Black Rails and Yellow Rails are ongoing, thanks to new funding through the State Wildlife Grant program administered by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. If you are interested in joining a rail drag survey this winter, please contact Jonathon.Lueck AT Audubon DOT org.
Happy birding!
