Date: 11/13/24 7:10 am From: Brian J. Miller <brianjosephmiller...> Subject: Zoom Presentation THIS Friday, Nov. 15, at 7PM on Red-cockaded Woodpeckers
Join Presque Isle Audubon virtually THIS Friday, Nov. 15, at 7PM for a presentation on Red-cockaded woodpeckers by Roxy Ohanyan. Roxy is a red-cockaded woodpecker biologist working for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. She began pursuing a career in ornithology in 2013, and has since travelled all over the US and beyond, and worked with a number of imperiled and endangered species, including 'Akohekohe in Hawaii, scarlet macaws in Mexico, puffins in Maine, and Florida scrub-jays in Florida. She received her M.S. in Fisheries and Wildlife science from Arkansas Tech University, where she studied the winter ecology of rusty blackbirds. In addition to studying birds for work, she enjoys chasing and photographing birds in her free time.
The red-cockaded woodpecker is one of the most recognizable and iconic birds of the southeastern US. Once common throughout this area, their population has declined drastically due to habitat loss and human encroachment. Decades of intensive monitoring and management have helped boost numbers and increase awareness for this unique and charismatic species. During her presentation, Araks will discuss the RCW's natural history, monitoring and management efforts for the species, and the work she does with the RCWs in central Florida.
Look for the Zoom link on the Presque Isle Audubon Society Programs webpage the morning of this presentation!
