There appear to be a number of WESTERN TANAGERS in San Francisco (presumably potentially overwintering). On Friday there was an active one (possibly two) in the plum trees at Simmonds Loop. On Saturday, there was one visible from the trail above El Polin Springs. And on Sunday, one was in the Eucalyptus trees west of the Fort Mason Community Garden. Today I started the day at Mountain Lake Park, where Robert Ho had photographed a female Common Merganser yesterday. It wasn't there, but the YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER at Elk Glen Lake was easily found. I then finished the morning at Fort Mason, where swarming termites were everywhere. The birds were having a feast, with many YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS catching them in the air, and many Sparrows on the ground, grabbing them as they emerged. The WESTERN TANAGER was still in the garden, and a BULLOCK'S ORIOLE was in the Battery.
