Even though I’ve been in Ohio for a while, I’ve never gone out to the wilds & I was in the mood to see someplace new and was hoping for at least ravens so I decided to drive out this morning. It’s a lovely area, although having seen many of the exotic animals in Africa, it’s a bit jarring to see them in Ohio, but I gather they do good work there.
The area was surprisingly birdless, although I did pick up my FOS Ring-necked Ducks on the ponds visible from the bird viewing area. Once from the visitor center area and then once from the bird viewing spot, I heard one raven call briefly from a distance. There were several crows being more vocal but the raven call was distinctly different. Not the most satisfying for my Ohio raven but it’ll have to do until I have a chance to see one.
Other than a N Harrier doing a low fly-by, there really weren’t very many birds around at all. I did see a male kestrel perched on the wires, but no Blue Jays or Cardinals. A handful of TVs. The only sparrows were song sparrows despite making a long walk on the new Stryker Ridge Trail on the loop section around the lake.
Hopefully the next time I go, they’ll be more birds. I’ll have to research the best times to be out there. I’m still hoping for an Ohio Golden Eagle & I know they’ve been seen in the past there.
