Birded the lower part of the Tres Pistolas Spring Trail this morning. It
was cool (didn't get out of the 40s all morning) and there was plenty of
snow in the shady spots, but the trail was clear. This trail starts at
about 6100 feet and goes all the way up to the Sandia Crest Trail, but I
only went up to about 7000 feet before turning around. I tallied 19 total
species, including 12 Woodhouse's Scrub-jay (I think that's a one-day high
for me), the bird of the day. Also had 3 Turdidae -- Townsend's Solitaire,
Am. Robin and W. Bluebird; and 4 Picidae -- N. Flicker, Red-naped
Sapsucker, and Ladder-backed and Hairy Woodpecker. There were lots of
Pinon Pines the higher up the trail I went, and lots of pine nuts, but no
Pinon Jays. Link to the eBird checklist is below.
