Subject: Wichita Audubon trip to Wellington City Lake and Anthony area Nov 10
Eight Wichita Audubon members participated in an all-day birding trip to
Wellington City Lake (Sumner County) today, then a few locations around
Anthony (Harper County) in the afternoon.  76 species were recorded.
Ardent and skilled Wellington birder Faith Shipley showed us around the
lake which she knows extremely well, and we found more birds because of
that.  We took a look at the Anthony WTP, had lunch at the interesting
Pizza Ranch, then spent an hour or so at Corey Entriken's rural property
north of Waldron, with a final cameo stop at Anthony City Lake including
Bonnie Geisen's Mockingbird Flower Farm.  Note: they will have their
shipment of Michigan Christmas trees shortly!

Waterfowl were less numerous than I had anticipated but we did find 16
species of waterfowl including Red-breasted and Hooded Mergansers and a
few Canvasbacks.

We heard Sandhill Cranes at Wellington City Lake and had a flock of 47
fly over at Corey's place.

There was a lingering American Avocet at Wellington Lake.  Small number
of Least Sandpipers at Wellington Lake and Anthony WTP.

Lower gull numbers than expected.  There was one American Herring Gull
at Wellington.

We recorded 365 DC Cormorants and 212 Am. White Pelicans.

N. Harriers were easy to come by.

The highlight for most was one Northern Shrike and one Mountain Bluebird
at the Entriken property.  I have birded a lot in Harper County over the
years and these were both county birds for me.

A flyover Smith's Longspur was identified by call.  Sparrow diversity
was ho-hum with only 7 species observed.

It was a good day to be out, sure beats working!  Ebird trip list here

I'm sure as we had lots of cameras deployed.
