There was an excellent turnout of 17 birders this morning for the HMBC Field Trip at Vischer Ferry Preserve. When we met, the temperature was hovering around 30 degrees but fortunately the first pond was still ice-free. We birded mostly along the west towpath moving toward the historic Lock 19.
This field trip is usually good for fall waterfowl. My favorite birds were several Northern Shovelers including 2 adult males. Other waterfowl include Hooded Mergansers, Northern Pintails, Green-winged Teal, and Wood Duck. Some other highlights, in my opinion, were Red-shouldered Hawk, Belted Kingfisher, Great Blue Heron, and Pileated Woodpecker. Noteworthy songbirds include Dark-eyed Junco, Fox Sparrow, Winter Wren, Northern Mockingbird, Cedar Waxwing, Hermit Thrush, and Eastern Bluebird. The biggest disappointment was what looked like a Northern Shrike at a distance but on closer inspection turned out to be a White-throated Sparrow. Counts may vary but my final count is 39 species including a few seen by others. Thanks to all the enthusiastic birders who made this morning fun.
