There was a nice raft of ducks, including FOS Common Mergansers, 16 Common Loons, and grebes off Shelter 12 late this afternoon. The Western Grebe might be a continuing bird from Monday. It looked like a monster swimming among 16 Horned Grebes.
As I was returning to my car, I saw a bird shoot across the parking lot and land in a tree. Nice scope views showed it to be an immature Merlin. It looked around and preened for a couple of minutes before taking off again.
Great way to end the day!
Should mention that gates to the shelter are locked during the week until April 1st. They open at 8 am on weekends and close at sunset.
