September through early November is usually the most active period in our small backyard in the Almaden Valley. Our neighbor has a Chinese Pistache tree attracts a wide variety of birds to our backyards (in addition to our Crepe Myrtle and Japanese Maple.) We have had our normal numbers of Bushtits, Chestnut-backed Chickadees, fewer than normal Yellow-rumped Warblers and greater than normal Hermit Thrushes (sometimes four at a time). A surprise earlier this week was a Say's Phoebe. I heard an unfamiliar whistle, and eventually a single Say's Phoebe was visible in a branch of the Pistache tree. We have had an individual at least two other times this week. We haven't had one of these in our yard before--a little farther away from their normal dry brush habitat.
