At 12:35 I had a Chestnut-collared Longspur flush from grass near the edge of the gravel road at 37.44883, -122.10628 at Byxbee Park. The bird called (“tidilip” or “chiddle chiddle”) repeatedly as it flew far to the east, nearly out over the flood control basin, before turning toward the north as though it were headed back to the landfill. There are two Horned Larks, 20 or so American Pipits, 8 Killdeer, and a number of Savannah Sparrows and Western Meadowlarks at the location where the bird flushed, the highest concentration of such grassland birds I’ve seen at Byxbee Park today, so finding such a concentration may help in refinding the longspur.
