Hello everyone,
We are almost a month away from the 125th Arcata Christmas Bird Count. It will be scheduled for *Saturday, December 14th, 2024*. The count covers the heart of Humboldt County from south Eureka, Humboldt Bay, Mad River bottoms, and north up to McKinleyville.
There is always a good mix of species, with always a few interesting rarities to be found. This year we have a Taiga Bean Goose to cross our fingers in hopes it may stay long enough for count day! This count usually averages 166 species. The last two seasons we totaled very high: 178 species in 2022 and 183 species in 2023. In the past couple years, we have gone over to digitally recording species using eBird as a group. I’d like to continue this method. It’s a great way to learn eBird as a tool and useful way to collect and arrange data. We will be doing a traditional compilation. This will consist of count participants meeting up the evening after the count to laugh, eat, tell stories about their day, and go over all species observed for day (total tally). I encourage all seasoned regulars to participate again and anyone else that may like to help. Please email or call me for those interested in helping.
*Compilation details:*
RRAS will be hosting the compilation dinner. Potluck (optional) as RRAS will be providing food and drinks.
Location: Bayside Grange
Address: 2297 Jacoby Creek Rd. Bayside, CA
Time: 5-7pm
They are looking for volunteers to help set up and clean up as well. If interested, please contact Kathryn Wendel.

As we get closer to the count, I will update everyone participating on the eBird sign in protocol.
Thank you, and good birding.
