Subject: [ia-bird] A Loony day in Polk County
I managed to find and view the Pacific Loon at Big Creek Lake this morning,
and then a Northern Shrike along the road as I drove out of the wildlife
area. Next, at Saylorville Lake I counted at least 34 Common Loons viewable
in the middle of the lake between the dam and Cherry Glen. Several were
diving, so my count of 34 is approximate, and at least one looked different
than a Common Loon, but it was too far away and disappeared on me. The
lake also had at least 15 species of waterfowl above the dam, lots being
diving ducks, plus one pair of Hooded Grebes. It was another great
November birding day, as I ended up with 63 species in 6 hours of birding.
