Subject: [SFBirds] Selasphorus hummingbirds - Mount Sutro
First noted on Friday afternoon and continuing late morning yesterday (11/3/24) there were two (and possibly 3) Rufous/Allen’s Hummingbirds dominating the abutilon patch just past the stairs of the Stanyan Street trailhead going up Mount Sutro.

In 2017 a Selasphorus hummingbird was noted in early November in the Arboretum (R. Cullison) and “wintered” through late December. This well studied and photographed individual was eventually identified as a hatch year male Rufous.

There’s also a record from 1972 of as many as 3 Rufous hummingbirds in Berkeley coming to feeders in November and December but otherwise “wintering” Rufous in NorCal are exceptionally rare.

Photos of the birds on Sutro so far have been inconclusive - all I have is a cell phone camera through binoculars set up - so anyone with a decent camera who’s interested in documenting these birds would be highly appreciated.

Approximate coordinates:

37.76136, -122.45263

The birds are easy to locate by their distinctive vocalizations.
