I am sorry to hear that your participation in local birding communities felt hostile and critical. That's just not cool.
My soapbox: Birding is supposed to be fun, inclusive, and encouraging to new people. The critical people give the craft a bad name, so no wonder new people sometimes don't want to get involved! Please let's stay positive, supportive, and remember that we all love birds and nature - the things that unite us.
Here's to always lovingly teaching others -- and ourselves - about the birds we hold so dear --
