This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for November 3, 2024.


A COMMON GROUND DOVE continued at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB through October 28. A letter of permission is required for access.

At least three LESSER NIGHTHAWKS continued at Santa Fe Dam in Irwindale through October 29. They are best seen at dusk.

The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER continued in the Ballona area in Playa del Rey. It associates with Black-bellied Plovers either along the creek above Pacific Ave. or on the adjacent salt pan.

Another PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER was at Malibu Lagoon on November 2.

LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS included one at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera on October 27, two along the Los Angeles River between the Atlantic and Slauson crossings in Maywood on October 30 and another along the river at Downey Road on November 2.

A WEDGE-TAILED SHEARWATER was offshore south of San Pedro on October 27.

A ZONE-TAILED HAWK was in Monrovia from November 1-2.

A juvenile YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was at Veteran’s Park in Sylmar on October 30.

A “BLACK” MERLIN was at Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach on November 1.

A TROPICAL KINGBIRD was at Mills Park in Carson on October 27.

Other TROPICAL KINGBIRDS continued at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera through October 28 (east of the end of Mines Ave.) and along the lower Los Angeles River through November 2 (south of the Willow Street crossing).

An EASTERN PHOEBE returned to Lake Lindero in Agoura Hills and was seen from November 1-2 near the spillway.

Two CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were at Two Harbors on Santa Catalina Island on October 27.

A DARK-EYED “PINK-SIDED” JUNCO continued in Sailboat Cove at Bonelli Regional Park through October 28.

WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS were at Pt. Fermin in San Pedro by the restrooms on October 28 and at Avalon on Santa Catalina Island on October 25.

A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE continued along the pathway at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through October 31.

BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS were Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas (by the old closed north shore pier) through November 2 and at Madrona Marsh in Torrance through October 29.

A LUCY’S WARBLER was on Santa Catalina Island on October 25 in the Avalon area.

A BAY-BREASTED WARBLER was at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood on October 29.

A continuing CAPE MAY WARBLER was at Loyola Marymount University through October 27. It favors this spot- Google Maps 33.9685, -118.4175.

A PAINTED REDSTART returned to a residence in West Los Angeles, presumably to winter, as of October 27.

Another PAINTED REDSTART was back at San Dimas Canyon Park on October 2 hanging out by the restrooms near the entrance. It was reported there through November 2.

SUMMER TANAGERS included one continuing in the Old Zoo area in Griffith Park through October 30 and in Palos Verdes Estates on November 2.

A SCARLET TANAGER was at Little Lake Park in Santa Fe Springs on November 1.
