Dennison has been overall fairly quiet, but Saturday I had at least five Purple Finches, four females and one male, but none today. The finches were feeding on berries along with waxwings, robins and hermit thrushes. I also had 2 Fox Sparrows singing in the same area.
Today I had two juncos which I missed yesterday. One interesting moment was a close hermit thrush calling then 2 others calling back to him from some distance and from different directions.
I then drove out to Oxbow at Hoover to see if by any chance the Red-necked Loon was still there. I didn’t see it but saw my FOS Hooded Mergansers. I also saw flock of dowitchers that I presumed were Long-billed. They were at the limits of my scope but were largish plump shorebirds with long straight bills feeding in the typical sewing machine fashion. I saw them fly. I would say they were 12 to 14 birds. A killdeer was in the same area for size comparison and they appeared a bit larger than the killdeer.
