Hi, birders,
There were 7 hardy locals to walk the windblown EOP dikes this morning. The
count of 73 species was not bad considering the wind kept most of the small
birds down in the weeds.
Highlights were the arrival of Canvasbacks, three of which pitched into one
of the main impoundments soon after we wondered why they were not in yet,
and a single Am. Avocet, whose white, black, and gray plumage was highly
visible against the dark blue water. Three Long-billed Dowitchers and five
Wilson's Snipe were noted. We watched a Great Blue Heron struggle to down a
bullfrog--it finally got it down, long hind legs and webbed feet last. A
Belted Kingfisher rattled and made a circuit of the main impoundments, but
didn't stay. Those folks who arrived just at dawn at the front gate saw
hundreds of Brewer's Blackbirds and scores of Great-tailed Grackles leaving
the EOP, headed for Sierra Vista.
Bird walks behind the locked gates of the Sierra Vista EOP occur every
Sunday morning. For the fall months (September-November) walks start
promptly at *7:00 a.m.* Arrive early at the EOP Bird Viewing Platform to
sign in with the guide--group size is limited to fifteen. Late arrivals
will not have access behind the locked gates. Scopes are useful. Bring a
hat and water--there is no shade nor any amenities on the walk route. There
is a chem toilet in the parking area.
The EOP is located just east (~ 3 miles) of Sierra Vista on AZ Hwy 90. Look
for the Brua Animal Care Center and the Wildlife Viewing signs on the north
side of Hwy 90. Turn left (north) and proceed to the bird viewing platform.
Note that Google Maps may direct you to the wrong entrance.
