The Mountain Plovers aren’t mentioned in the post title, but Paul did
report our sighting on 11/29/09 under the title “Tundra Swans + Interesting
Shorebirds…” and he writes that Mountain Plover was the best candidate
matching the two birds. All four of us were still gainfully employed in
‘09, and it took awhile for each of us to independently research the
sighting and rule out similar species. We then shared notes and submitted
them to NABirds, since the CBRC doesn’t review out of place Mountain Plover
sightings. But our report was not published, and the record fell through
the cracks between disjointed information systems. I don’t think eBird was
being used locally back then, if it existed.
