PA birders: Yesterday at 6:40 PM I stepped outside my door and immediately heard a Cooper's hawk making a lot of noise, so I looked in that direction and saw 2 birds land in a nearby tree, one of which was huge. The hawk continued to make noise while I ran inside to get my binoculars. I found the larger one with my binoculars and even though it was getting dark, there was no doubt I was seeing a great horned owl. I could see the "horns" and a white patch on its breast. The hawk was a large accipiter and it was perched in the same tree, but not very close to the owl. After a few minutes it stopped making its kuk, kuk, kuk, kuk, etc. call and flew away. The owl left shortly afterwards. What a super cool bird! I've heard them hooting a few times in the 32 years I've lived here, but have never seen one from my own backyard. I had stepped outside for another reason, not at all to look for birds, and I'm so glad I did. -- Lauren Conkle Washington, PA <chickadee54...>
