- Comments: "County bird, thanks for the great find Hugh! Drab, plainly colored longspur with very short primary projection, dark triangle in tail, and making unique single-note calls unlike other longspurs when flushed (sounded like the first note of their classic shorebird-like chatter call). Chestnut-collared Longspur (Calcarius ornatus) (1)
- Reported Nov 01, 2024 08:56 by Mark Holmgren
- Elings Park, Santa Barbara, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-119.7349691&<ll...>,-119.7349691 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S201016858 - Media: 4 Photos
- Comments: "After long, langourous, and close views, the bird took off on a long flight heading east. I thought it was on its way, but I understand that Alex C. was able to refind it this later morning. Bland, sandy-colored, and poorly delineated markings throughout. Smaller, pinkish mandible and most of the maxilla, but bill color varied with the light conditions. Culmen darker. Only the greater wing coverts were visible and those were more amber-colored than the flight feathers. White eyering was most pronounced below the eye. As it flew away, it issued several 2-note calls that to my ear were almost fluty and bluebird-like."
