I was at Drakes Beach yesterday and came across a couple of Common Ravens digging in the sand. I spend quite a bit of time birding at beaches and I haven't seen this behavior. They leave fairly deep holes of about 4-5" deep. There is nothing specific on the Cornell sites about this behavior, but other sources suggest they are hunting for mole crabs. Just a very interesting thing to watch. The beach had many holes like the one in the photo.
