First, some relatively minor new news from today (Weds): A Tropical Kingbird present this morning along Dairy Mart Road adjacent to Dairy Mart and the sod farm, with a couple Cassin's Kingbirds, could well be the same bird that has wintered in this area for some 5 or so years now; and a Golden-crowned Kinglet in Coronado was very rare for the (coastal) lowlands.
As for the MIA Groove-billed Ani in Carlsbad, the general thought is if it has left the one long row of trees, brush, and weeds along which it was initially seen, then it is unlikely to be re-found. Just too much habitat in the area. Also, even if missed today until sunset, it would at least be worth a check tomorrow morning during the first couple hours of daylight when cool, and the bird is hungry, as it would likely perch up a bit in spots to sun itself and warm up.
