Observation start time: 08:00:00 Observation end time: 16:00:00 Total observation time: 8 hours
Official Counter: Julie Brown, Phil Brown
Observers: Chuck Carlson, Tom Delaney
Visitors: 35 including a group of 12 students from the Well School who spent quite some time with Julie and Tom in the morning dreaming of seeing birds. They still had a good time.
Weather: Chilly and overcast. Temps 1-4 C (34-39 F). A light breeze mainly from the NW to NE, shifting easterly in the afternoon. Low ceiling covering most of the Whites and Green Mountains. Hazy/smoggy with increasing moisture in the afternoon.
Raptor Observations: Not much to report, but the first migrant, a distant Harrier, drifted east from the rocks at North Pack, at 1:59 pm! The only other raptor was an adult male Merlin, who first appeared suddenly, strafing Gina the owl and then booking it north until disappearing. He appeared again in the last quarter hour of the count, repeatedly attacked Gina, and perched in a close snag, giving us great photo opps!
Non-raptor Observations: Only 11 species for the day. Common Loon - 1 migrating Brown Creeper - 1 Other usual suspects.
Predictions: Rain tonight could mean a foggy start. Winds shifting to the south aren't encouraging, but if light enough with sunshine, there's a good chance for a few more birds than today's paltry total. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Phil Brown (<brown...>) Pack Monadnock Raptor Migration Observatory information may be found at: www.harriscenter.org
