I haven't been to that part of Costa Rica, but if you've never been there
before I suspect you will not be disappointed with all the new birds you
will see, even in that region.

My recommendation is to ask the hotel to arrange a bird guide for you. I
usually "negotiate" with my wife to let me have a day or half a day during
a family trip like that and book a bird guide to maximize what I'm able to
do. I am sure any tourist hotel worth its salt in Costa Rica will have bird
guides at the ready. In a setting like that, it is so much easier because
they can quickly identify the species for you, as opposed to searching
through dozens of look alikes yourself. I can't think of a single time I
have regretted hiring a guide in a place where I wasn't familiar with the
birds.

If you are staying at an Airbnb or something like that I suspect the
property manager also has a list of recommended tourist guides/companies.

And I would book the guide earlier in the trip so that when you are on your
own during the rest of the trip, birding casually, you will benefit from
what you learned from them, especially figuring out the most common birds
so you don't get stuck too much on those.

Have fun!
