I decided to go for a walk yesterday afternoon. Started down the driveway as usual, but went back to the house for a moment and then decided to go out the back door and around the house. Came around the side of a large rhododendron and there was a woodcock on the ground, less than ten feet in front of me, which didn't flush and I was able to observe for at least ten minutes. It was still there and actively feeding when I left for the walk. So close that I got decent pictures even with my cell phone. It stood still when I came too close at first, but then resumed feeding once I took a step back. Pretty cool to see at close range and for extended period of time.
