Thanks for the info, Shari and John; and for passing along Ross's suggestions. I'll try to pay more attention to things like number of phrases, spacing of phrases, and periods of silence between calls when I'm next in California. Of course, the California population might differ from the one in Nebraska.
That 10–20-minute interval of silence does seem rather long. That might be a typo, though I'm inclined to trust the figure of 2–7 min given later: a 2-second gap wouldn't really seem like a gap at all.
