Subject: DEVIL’S DEN IN FALL BIRDS AND COLORS
Despite record setting high temps for mid-October ...
Despite drought ...
Despite political onslaught of an upcoming election ...
Despite all that …
And snug deep in the eternity of the Boston Mountains …
And in such timelessness impervious to all despites …
Devil’s Den State Park!
Very colorful fall leaf-wise and full of fall migrant birds.
I pushed all that “despite” stuff out of the way today and spent the morning trying to turn falling Red Maple leaves into male Summer Tanagers. That didn’t work out, but nevertheless a lot did work.

It was a sign of good things to come when not 1, not 2, but 3 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers perched on a tree, side-by-side. Two disappeared, but one hung there on the side, outlined by a blue fall sky, and the vastness of Ozark National Forest rolling maybe endlessly behind.
Another good sign: at least 10, and probably more, Yellow-rumped Warblers, on the ground under a brilliant red-and-green-and yellow Sweetgum, covered with ripe, seed-filled balls. Hanging on the balls – American Goldfinches, knocking out seed on the ground to the yellow-rumps.
Working together. Something worth learning from –
And now finally, on my way out: a small flock of Dark-eyed Juncos.
