Last year there was a big crow roost in Laconia this time of year centered on Gilbert Street that I estimated held 3,000 to 5,000 birds. This year the roost, at least as of tonight, is centered in the trees between Batchelder and High Streets and Beaman and Avery Streets, just a few blocks SE of downtown and across the street from the hospital. The roost is so large that some late-comers have to take up positions in trees in adjacent blocks. I estimate the size is similar to last year's. They started coming in to the roost at 6:00 and continued coming in as I left at 6:20. At one point I was standing under hundreds and hundreds of crows as they streamed in overhead.
They begin stirring soon after 6:00 am in the pitch black. Crows can see in the dark.
