Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] Possible Burrowing Owl at San Elijo
Pulling out onto southbound San Elijo Avenue right after sunset, from the bluff where everyone watches the sunset, I saw what seemed like could only be a burrowing owl fly from the west-facing bluffs south down between two of the cliff side residences (approx. 33.0145786, -117.2787597). It was a little smaller in flight than I think of BUOW, and the wingbeats seemed a little slower, but that said it’s been years since I’ve seen one fly.

I’m leaving town for work this evening and won’t be back until Thursday so sharing in case anyone in the area wants to keep their eyes out. There is a multi-day eBird record for BUOW in this area from February 2021.

The monthly meetings of San Diego Field Ornithologists (SDFO) are currently virtual, open only to members, at 6pm on the third Tuesday of every month.

Two notable on-line resources are available for San Diego birders: the San Diego County Bird Atlas by Phil Unitt (2004) - http://sdplantatlas.org/BirdAtlas/BirdPages.aspx ; and an update of notable records for San Diego County (2002–present), compiled by Paul Lehman - https://bvaudubon.org/birding-resources/ .
