Swamp Sparrow (Melospiza georgiana) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Oct 18, 2024 11:43 by Ryan Seppala
- El Capitan State Beach, Santa Barbara, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.0230491&<ll...>,-120.0230491 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S199389571 - Media: 4 Photos, 1 Audio
- Comments: "At the El Capitan Creek mouth. “Tsip” call notes distinct from SOSP. Rich chestnut on wings, lack of a bold malar stripe (compared to SOSP), broad supercilium, gray nape, a contrasting white throat, dark auriculars, thick dark streaks running vertically down the mantle, warm buffy tones and some streaking on flanks, and minimal streaking on the breast, although a collared appearance was noted. The bird was incredibly brave and came to within ~5 feet of me on a couple occasions.
Photos show possibly 2 birds based on patterns on the head and mantle, which would not be surprising as I had multiple sightings on both sides of the creek over half an hour, though never more than one individual at once."

Dull olive greenish above with dark streaks on the mantle, two white wing bars, mostly whitish below with a pale yellowish wash to the upper breast, faint breast streaking at the sides and down the flanks, thin dark eye line with a broken eye ring, fleshy colored legs and feet. It was frequently being harassed by a Yellow-rumped Warbler. Photographed"
