Observation start time: 07:00:00 Observation end time: 16:45:00 Total observation time: 9.75 hours
Official Counter: Caroline Fegley, Mark Timmerman
Observers: Francie VonMertens, Mark Timmerman, Meade Cadot, Tom Delaney
Visitors: 44 including 5 students and 2 teachers from Beaver Brook Association learning about migration with Nikko.
Weather: Heavy NW/W winds. Storms across the northern horizon most of the day and some icy snowflakes briefly on the hawkwatch around 9:30am. Full cloud coverage dissipating to clear skies by the last two hours. -1-5 C (30-41 F)
Raptor Observations: Raptors migrated low except a few sharp-shinneds on the owl and some steady bald eagles. We were hoping for a 4pm golden eagle, but got a 4pm American goshawk instead. Every time I thought I'd scope-scan one last time, another raptor or geese popped into view. Sadly, the count had to end at 4:45pm.
Nonmigrants: 1 redtail, 1 turkey vulture
Non-raptor Observations: 1 very unexpected monarch, 11 bluejays, 15 juncos, 2 chickadees, 4 ravens, 1 yellow-rumped warbler, 3 house finches, 1 white-throated sparrow, 33 american crows, 346 canada geese
Predictions: Light northern winds and sun hopefully producing some turkey vulture trains chugging on through.
On this day in Pack history... "2009: Lance Lanino: Triple whammy! Triple digit daily total with great movement by Turkey Vultures, Red-shouldered Hawks, and Red-tailed Hawks. Many adults accipiters, RT, and RS. It was a great feeling to see a nice flock of 14 TVs stream over North Pack in a tight flock and ride the updrafts over the saddle and stream over Pack heading southwest.
