At about 10:20 am today, with a small group of Wednesday birders, a Lark Bunting was briefly seen along the northern edge of the main pond of Famosa Slough, viewed from the north boundary east-west trail by West Point Loma Blvd. The bird flew from bushes at the water's edge into a reed-covered small island, perched there momentarily, then flew back and disappeared into the shoreline vegetation. Took flight again from slough-side bushes, then disappeared again and was not see again by us. Large headed sparrow with large, bluish- silver beak, prominent black and whitish malar streaking, breast and flank streaking (the streaks coalescing into a dark breast spot). Its rather white covert patches were seen on the wings in flight, as well as white spots on outer tail feathers. It was with other sparrows, including smaller and shorter-tailed savannas. Viewing spot was athttp://maps.google.com/maps?<q...>,-117.2284477
Previously reported Green-tailed Towhee and Dickcissel were also seen in same general location where the Lark Bunting was seen. The continuing Black-throated Sparrow was seen earlier in previously reported location on west side of Slough.
