Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Oct 14, 2024 17:07 by John Callender
- La Tierra Lane, Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-119.524794&<ll...>,-119.524794 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S198943372 - Media: 6 Photos
- Comments: "Found by Eric Culbertson. Originally entered as sapsucker sp.; changing to Yellow-bellied based on much-appreciated feedback from helpful experts, one of whom writes, "No other sapsucker should have that much juvenile plumage in mid-October. In addition, there is no red yet on the throat which Red-naped have already by now, and the back pattern looks fine for Yellow-bellied.""

Warm light-brown above and paler below, with light streaking on breast and belly, bright yellow undertail, broad pale supercilium, hint of a dark eyeline, and weak buffy wingbars. Pumping tail constantly. Photo."
Wilson's Warbler (pileolata) (Cardellina pusilla pileolata) (1)
- Reported Oct 15, 2024 10:26 by Ann Stockert
- 7402 - 7418 Hollister Ave (Tech Park), Santa Barbara, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-119.8908561&<ll...>,-119.8908561 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S199060999 - Comments: "Apparent AHY male pileolata, a good example of one if you ask me. On east side. Very dull Wilson’s. Belly and underparts mostly dull greenish yellow, breast and face dull pale yellow, lores and some of face dull greenish, and forehead dusky yellowish, all duller and paler yellow/green than I’d expect in expected chryseola. Green in back and face more olive than I’d expect in chryseola. Black cap noticeably smaller than expected in chryseola, with olive nape bleeding into the back of the crown. Appeared smaller and perhaps slightly longer-tailed than might be expected in chryseola, not sure on that. I have experience with both pileolata and chryseola. Pics maybe."
Hepatic Tanager (Piranga flava) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Oct 15, 2024 15:08 by Toby Fowler
- Evergreen Open Space, Santa Barbara, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-119.8909131&<ll...>,-119.8909131 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S199076283 - Comments: "Heptastic. Very red, giving chups, not a pit-tuk like a Summer. Found it by its calls, up in the eucs here (34.437231,-119.888345). Not the greatest pictures (or really views) because of the overcast, but it had more ashy coloring than an adult Summer would have. I'll look back through the photos to confirm, but I saw a grey bill.
If it's the one from last year (which I missed), it's so cool to see its new plumage through all the photos! It's making me hope the UCSB SUTA comes back through, because that one should be bright red too!"
