Some of you might be interested in a new book “Feather Trails: A Journey of Discovery Among Endangered Birds” by Sophie Osborn.

She describes her work to release, monitor and support 3 captive-raised bird species;
Peregrine Falcons in Idaho
Hawaiian Crow in Hawaii
California Condor in Grand Granyon NP

She does not cover the captive breeding of these species, which she was not involved with.

I was unfamiliar with the work on the latter 2 species.

Besides her interesting personal stories & observations of each species‘ behaviors, she goes through the challenges of releasing and monitoring each species.

Hawaii has unique challenges, many of which also affect multiple other endemic birds, which are under multiple threats.

The CA condor faces a major challenge from lead poisoning as a result of the lead shot in carcasses that they feed on. It’s amazing the lengths they go to when releasing, monitoring and supporting these condors. I didn’t know that they nest in caves!

It’s a worthwhile, easy read and gives you a much fuller picture of what’s involved.
