Has anyone ever seen this happen? I was pretty surprised to see a full adult Red-shouldered Hawk tearing strips off of an obviously road-killed, large adult opossum, and gulping them down, in Wilkes county along Elk Creek Road today. Pretty sure I never saw this before, and a quick net search found a 2002 paper by Bill Pranty detailing his surprise finding of same in Florida, but little else was found.
I would be very happy to hear of any personal anecdotes or references where this behavior was seen or mentioned.
