Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] returning wintering rarities, lingering Black-chinneds, a few other things
Some rarities that are presumed returning for additional winters have started to turn up recently. Headlining that list so far are the female Broad-billed Hummingbird at Golden Hill for its second year, and the Sage Thrasher at Kendall Frost/Crown Point and the Tropical Kingbird at Robb Field, both back for at least their third years. Also the Pacific Golden-Plover back roosting at high tide at "Stint Island" at the Salt Works for at least year #2, a male American Redstart near Montgomery Field for its third year, Northern Waterthrush(es) at Dairy Mart, and already several Plumbeous Vireos that could well be returning birds. And today, one can add to the list the adult male American Redstart at the Kettner Blvd. entrance to Seaport Village for its second year, and another adult male American Redstart in Coronado that is probably returning but was missed last winter following two previous years present.

For several years now, Black-chinned Hummingbirds have been routinely lingering into early October, later than in earlier years. Currently there are still five at Tierrasanta feeders (plus a Costa's) and a couple other single Black-chins in north county.

Other recent birds of note include a female/immature Orchard Oriole yesterday (5 Oct) near Montgomery Field, and a White-winged Dove missing its entire tail at the TRV Community Gardens today. During the past week there have been several unchaseable Bobolinks in the TRV. Six Yellow-headed Blackbirds continue at the Sunset Road goat pens in the TRV, with additional Yellow-headeds west of Hollister (1), near Dairy Mart (2), and in Coronado (2). A total of four Vermilion Flycatchers (2 imm males, 2 females) have been at the Sunset ball fields in the TRV lately, although some of them may no longer be present, and another new bird (female) was at Kimball Park in National City. A Hammond's Flycatcher in Coronado. Single Red-breasted and Red-naped Sapsuckers in Harry Griffen Regional Park.

The monthly meetings of San Diego Field Ornithologists (SDFO) are currently virtual, open only to members, at 6pm on the third Tuesday of every month.

Two notable on-line resources are available for San Diego birders: the San Diego County Bird Atlas by Phil Unitt (2004) - http://sdplantatlas.org/BirdAtlas/BirdPages.aspx ; and an update of notable records for San Diego County (2002–present), compiled by Paul Lehman - https://bvaudubon.org/birding-resources/ .
