To go along with Nick’s report, I did the other half of Scorpion vs.
Prisoner’s today. My highlights were Northern Waterthrush, Blackpoll
Warbler, 2 Pacific Wrens, Northern Pintail (rare on the island), and a
minimum of 5 Virginia Rails. Overall migrant numbers were lackluster, but
obviously there were some goodies to be found. The most abundant bird by
far was the sordida subspecies of Orange-crowned Warbler, which is doing
very well since the drought ended.
Nick and I went out today to compare results from Scorpion and Prisoner’s
on the same day. Obviously the birding is pretty different in each harbor,
but I’d say today was a draw (in terms of rarity numbers at least). I’m try
to spur people on to do more of these two harbor days, so if anyone is
interested let me know. It’s a great excuse to get out there (granted it’s
scary not knowing what the other person is seeing until after).
