Next week, the Sioux Falls Bird Club will hold two events. The first is our fall meeting, which will be Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7:00 p.m. at the Outdoor Campus (4500 S Oxbow Ave). In addition to going over club business and talking about our field trip schedule for next year, we will hear a presentation from Dennis Skadsen about his bird banding efforts at Good Earth State Park this year.
Our October field trip will be just a couple days later, on Saturday, Oct. 12. We will meet at the Outdoor Campus for that as well, at 8:00 a.m. We will plan to go out to Wall Lake and Dewey Gevik Conservation Area to look for migrant sparrows, late warblers, gulls, and whatever else we can find. We will aim to be back to the OC around midday.
You do not need to be a club member to attend either event, all are welcome.
As for migrants, the north winds last night appeared to have brought some birds in to the Sioux Falls area. My lunchtime trip to Elmwood Park today yielded some new faces for the season including Winter Wren, Golden-crowned Kinglet, and a slightly late Wood Thrush, plus a bunch of White-throated, Clay-colored, and Lincoln's Sparrows, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, and Orange-crowned, Yellow-rumped, and Nashville Warblers. Yesterday I had a Brown Creeper and some Dark-eyed Juncos there as well.
