Sage Thrasher (Oreoscoptes montanus) (2) CONFIRMED
- Reported Sep 29, 2024 09:29 by Grigory Heaton
- Santa Cruz Island--Scorpion Canyon Campgrounds, Santa Barbara, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-119.5645389&<ll...>,-119.5645389 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S196979531 - Media: 2 Photos
- Comments: "Continuing, one foraging on the ground in the upper campground, another one later with sparrows near the kayak rental camp. Small streaky thrashers with short bills and orange eyes. Photos"
Brief views of it in a dense oak (34.434559, -119.860976), just to the left of where it's been seen over the last view sightings. Best view was of its back half, showing grey above, yellow below with black streaks. Briefly saw it from the outside of the tree (and got a very overexposed photo...) showing the white eyering. I think we saw it head over the creek a few minutes after this (~5:27), and it was pretty silent after that.
Waited for another hour but it didn't show back up. Seems to like this area, but maybe only as part of a larger circuit."

I was tracking a bunting and noticed a bird next to it with a streaked mantle, and it turned out to be a beautiful DICK! In addition to a streaked mantle, the bird had fine streaking on the breast with a yellow wash, some yellow on what were predominantly a white supercilium and submoustachial stripe, a dark malar stripe, a large fleshy bill with a decurved upper mandible, streaking on the lower flanks, and hints of chestnut on the wingbars. Primaries, secondaries, and coverts were predominantly black at the base. The bird moved around for the next few hours, usually near the fig but sometimes along the southern boundary of the open space. Photos later."
